8 Apr 1865 - Funeral of Robert Damell held at St. Paul's, Richmond. Damell's fellow African-Americans sat downstairs, white mourners sat upstairs, and black minister Junius Taylor of St. Phillip's Episcopal Church assisted rector Beverly Danbridge Tucker in the service. These "firsts" occurred in honor of Damell's 18 years of service as St. Paul's sexton. Damell had been a "buffalo soldier" (Ninth Regiment, U.S. Calvary) in the Southwest and was later a first sergeant in the Tenth Regiment, U. S. Calvary, in Cuba.

Resurrection is incarnation coming to its logical conclusion. If God is already in everything, then everything is from glory and unto glory. We’re all saved by mercy, without exception. We’re all saved by grace, so there’s no point in distinguishing degrees of worthiness because God alone is “all good,” and everything else in creation participates in that one, universal goodness to varying degrees. There is no absolute dividing line between worthy and unworthy people in the eyes of God, because all our worthiness is merely participation in God’s.Richard Rohr

The following telegram was sent by Robert E. Lee (who worshipped at St. Paul's, Richmond when he was able) to Jefferson Davis (who was confirmed in the church in 1862):
"I advise that all preparation be made for leaving Richmond tonight."
The telegram was received by Davis as he worshipped in St. Paul's Church on Sunday, April 2, 1865.
